The European series of standards for Variable Message Signs (VMS), BS EN 12966, which were published in 2005, are under review.
According to VMS Limited, a UK-based VMS manufacturer, the standards specify “functional requirements that are not technology specific and, when followed by designers and manufacturers, will result in a product of good quality and performance”.
The standard is made up of three parts:
o Part 1: Product standard
o Part 2: Initial type testing
o Part 3: Factory production control
The standards sit in CEN TC 226, the CEN technical committee for roadside equipment. The CEN website states that an amendment to part 1, “EN 12966-1:2005/prA1” is to be completed by December 2009.
